Which headset is right for me?

With a headset, what matters first is what you use it for and what you connect it to. An office headset should carry your voice clearly, filter out open-plan noise and stay comfortable all day. A gaming headset needs a connection without delay, good sound and a microphone your team can understand. The finder above asks about use, devices, cable, microphone, wearing time and your wishes. The result is a ranking where every place is explained. Manufacturers and retailers cannot buy a place in it.

Office or gaming

For home office plus evening gaming, look for a headset that does radio and Bluetooth at the same time: game audio from the PC or console, calls from the phone.

Wired, radio or Bluetooth

• Wired (jack or USB): no battery, no delay, usually cheaper. With a 3.5 mm jack a headset works on almost any device, including PlayStation and Xbox controllers.
• Radio with its own receiver (2.4 GHz): wireless without noticeable delay, the right choice for wireless gaming.
• Bluetooth: handy with phones and laptops, but the sound lags behind in games. Office headsets with a Bluetooth dongle are built for calls, not for games.

Xbox: wireless headsets only work on Xbox if the maker built them for it. There is usually a separate Xbox version (often with an “X” in the name). The finder lists both versions separately because they work with different devices.

The microphone: rated by tests, not by marketing

Almost every maker promises “AI noise cancellation” and “crystal-clear voice”. That can’t be compared. We therefore rate the microphone by independent tests, mainly RTINGS and SoundGuys: voice quality very good, good, average or weak, noise filter good, average or weak. How much this counts depends on where you say you talk. If you talk next to family, a keyboard or in an open office, models with a good noise filter move up.

Many office headsets have not been independently tested yet. They don’t lose points for that, but we point it out. Headsets without a boom arm (microphones in the ear cups) usually sound worse in noisy places.

Comfort and battery

For all-day wear, weight matters: under 250 g you hardly notice a headset, over 350 g it presses after a few hours. For wireless models we show the battery life the maker states. Real runtimes are often shorter, especially with lighting or active noise cancelling (ANC). ANC dampens steady noise such as fans or traffic but doesn’t help the microphone. Open-back headsets sound airy but let sound in and out.
