Questions about height, space and load, then a transparent ranking.

Which standing desk is right for me?

Above all, a sit-stand desk has to fit your height: when standing, the top should be at about elbow height, and the same when sitting. After that come space, load and how often you change the height. The finder above asks exactly that and works out the right desk height from your body height. The result is a ranking in which every place is explained. Manufacturers and retailers cannot buy a spot.

The right height

The work surface should be “at about elbow height with the upper arms hanging loosely”, sitting or standing (German workplace guideline DGUV Information 215-410). The guideline gives no figures per body height. We use typical body proportions, standing with shoes:

Body height Sitting approx. Standing approx.
150 cm (4’11”) 60 cm (24”) 95 cm (37”)
160 cm (5’3”) 64 cm (25”) 101 cm (40”)
170 cm (5’7”) 68 cm (27”) 107 cm (42”)
180 cm (5’11”) 72 cm (28”) 114 cm (45”)
190 cm (6’3”) 76 cm (30”) 120 cm (47”)
200 cm (6’7”) 80 cm (31”) 126 cm (50”)

What matters most is the highest position. If it isn’t high enough for standing, the desk drops out of the list. If the lowest position is a little high for sitting, that’s not a dealbreaker: raise your chair and use a footrest, which is how shorter people work at standard desks too. Note that manufacturers state the height sometimes with and sometimes without the top. We convert everything to the top surface, assuming a 2.5 cm (1”) top for frames.

Complete desk or frame only

A complete desk comes with a top and is quick to set up. A frame is cheaper and takes a top you already have or choose yourself, such as solid wood. Most frames adjust in width. The finder shows which top widths fit.

Load capacity: the top counts

Manufacturers like to quote the static load, at rest. What matters is the dynamic load, meaning what the desk lifts while moving, and that includes the top. A 160 × 80 cm chipboard top weighs about 23 kg (50 lb), solid wood much more. We assume 60 kg for a laptop or one monitor, 90 kg for two monitors and a PC, and 120 kg for lots of gear or a heavy top. Some headroom helps, because motors get louder and slower under full load.

One motor, two motors or a crank

  • Two motors (one per column) lift more, move more evenly and are standard from the mid range up.
  • One motor drives both columns via a shaft. That’s fine for light loads, but these desks often carry only 60 to 80 kg.
  • Hand crank: no power, no motor noise, but about 50 turns for the full range. That’s too much effort several times a day, so the finder only shows crank desks if you rarely switch.

If you switch often, memory presets for sitting and standing height help.

Stability: rated by build

There is no independent test that measures the stability of many desks in a comparable way. So we rate it by build: very stable means four legs or heavy premium frames, stable means two-motor frames with a spec sheet, basic means one motor, a hand crank or low load capacity. Wobble mostly shows near the top of the range, so tall people who stand a lot should look out for it.

Prices and retailers

Prices are guide prices from the manufacturers’ own shops in October 2026, not from Amazon. For frames, the price is without a top. You see the current price at the retailer. We only link to Amazon if the desk is available there. For store brands that only sell on Amazon, manufacturer data is often incomplete. The results say so.
